Short-Horned Lizard
Scientific Name: Phrynosoma Douglassii
Found in more states than any other Horned Lizard, this high altitude lizard is one of the only two in the United States that has live birth. Ranging from mid to northern Mexico all the way up into Canada, this species is truly the entrepreneur of the species. The Short Horned Lizard also ranges as high as 10,500 feet. The range of the Short Horned Lizard has greatly shrank in the last few years due in part to increased human population and activity including the introduction of aggressive exotic ants which can not be eaten by the species and kill off their natural food supply, the harvester ant. However, the Short Horned Lizard is probably the most prevalent in the United States because of living at high altitudes and the size of this species range.
